THE FUTURE

Obviously I can see a lot of government authority and control going on in what I read/saw. But what seemed to stand out in my mind when I went through this blog assignment was the podcast “Welcome to Night Vale”. It sounded like the opening to a “Goosebumps” movie because of the way the man talked (now to get back on track). We see especially in Night Vale and “Night of the Living Dead” is the control of government because in the podcast it talks about how we shouldn’t go near the dog park, Why? Now that the question because we (the public) don’t know what’s going on or who those shadowed people are either. You have to report everything you see to higher authority and it makes me hope that our society never really gets to that point where we have to check out our front door to see if we can leave the house.

Something else that drew my eye was the PBS short film and how he talked about zombies relating to technology and how we are scared of it. Luddites that are people afraid of technology went around and destroyed whatever they saw that related to technology, Why? Because they hated it, it gave them the creep I guess. But he had a good point going on in this, which was that zombies take over society, like iPhones spreading across society like a disease like a zombie. I found this very interesting. Also we see the “Hunger Games” brought up in this because rich people are favored in this movie while everyone else is left for dead, this is a controlling government. Higher authority taking care of there own while not caring or the rest, no equality. In the end we see that higher authority is seizing the power from the people to only benefit and take care of themselves. This is so true because it relates to Harrison Bergeron, this was pretty much the story of how one guy might out smart the system so they took him away from society to get rid of him. This makes me think that anything can happen in our society because we have a government that can’t sit with one concept for very long, and also our government loves to enforce rules. This makes me thinking of BIG BROTHER someone is always watching you. Since this world is turning into a heavy technology era, I can see the government using that to their own advantage. Have you ever looked at the new iPhone 5S? Well if you haven’t, you can now unlock your phone with your fingerprint and do other cool things with that. But its like your giving your own identity away to technology consumers because everyone is hacking these days. Just relaying this information back to where we started, government influences us and we seem to just nod it off and I really don’t think we should do that. Overall I think this will be a interesting unit to do in class and hear what everyone is thinking.

           Throughout this assigned reading, we see that this mostly talks about class division and social status. Starting off with “The House on Mango Street” which talks about a young woman named Esperanza struggling for her dream. Her dream being to live a high-class life rather then a poor life. We see that this mostly talks about rape, abuse, and control of woman because of what is going on throughout the story. We see Esperanza struggles on Mango Street and we see that she wants to better herself and get away rather then worry about her neighbor Sally getting raped and abused. It seems that it’s hard to get away once you’re slapped on with the notion of lower class.

            In “For Poor, Leap to College Often Ends in a Hard Fall” I felt that I had made a personal connection to the article because I come from a lower-income family and I am a twin. In the article it talks about how triplets strive to get a better education and they do but they seemed to be overwhelmed by all of the school debt by the end of it. It seemed to me that the girls didn’t enjoy much of there college experience and so the ended up not doing to hot when they got out of college. I especially understand that it is hard to enjoy school when your are struggling to find a job after college. I can relate because my parents are divorced and me and my brother and my mom live on one income, while my dad doesn’t help. I definitely do agree that you need to enjoy life a little more especially in college because once you get out your in the real world now and it’s all work.

            In the Chris Rock video it talks about how there are no signs named after black people. I feel that Chris Rock made a informative argument because he is right and it just goes to show that people still aren’t really for it. When Chris Rock was endorsing Tupac we could see white people’s reactions towards the petition and is showed that people from low class don’t get appreciated much. Nor do they like the fact that we were trying to change the sign to “Tupac Way” or something along the lines of that. I feel that this was an interesting experience to see where America is at when it comes to race and social class. I interpreted it as we still have a long way to go.

            In the last piece, which was the green day music video. We see the art of war and how that can be interpreted. I sort of saw that low class being shown, when we don’t have much, so you go to war to make a name for yourself. This music video shows that you got everything but money and maybe that’s all you need to be happy but for some people that is not enough. So we see this image of war while you also see the image of lost love because you went of to war.

Humans VS Nature

             After going through what we needed to read and after reviewing the topic of the segment, I can see connections being made with all of the pieces. We can clearly see in the writing and the videos that everything revolves around nature. Nature is all around us everywhere we go. We see it everyday. Bringing this back to our pieces for the segment, In the “Gas land” trailer we see that there is water contamination. The federal government is buying portions of people’s lands and drilling for oil. The correct term for this is hydraulic fracturing; it’s where you drill into the ground for oil to rise. But as the federal government is drilling they are starting to pollute the water supply destroying nature. As water supplies decrease for people then comes the possibility to no life. In our second video clip “Spike Lee”, we see a man going to New Orleans to see the aftermath of the horrible tsunami that happened. Spike soon realizes that there is not much help being provided to the people affected in the tsunami. He states in his video that there is little respect towards people in New Orleans from the federal government since they do no provide enough support for people. As this video continues there are images of the environment being shown. We can see that nature is drastically being affected and this seems to be a problematic concern for people. In “Vanishing Ice”, we see that glaciers, sea ice, and ice sheets are rapidly changing because of human production of greenhouse gases. What humans are doing now to nature is affecting us long-term. Will there be a future if we keep releasing more greenhouse gases? This is a question we will just have to wait and see on because as of right now ice contains 75% of the world’s fresh water. Then we had “Snow Fall”, we see a lot of ups and downs with nature and horrific accidents with conditions of snow fall. Nature is presented to me in a way that beauty is death. I say this because people chose to try something different like going back country skiing, this then leads to seeing nature from a different perspective but in unlikely events turns into death (that being the avalanche).

            “The Tyger” poem seems to bring us what nature really is using the tiger as a depiction. This seems to be the leading point in the poem because William Blake also wants us to know about humans and nature and how they relate. The author uses the tiger, humans, and nature as a stepping-stone because he’s showing us they are all good in their own way but still are dangerous. In the other poems we see unity with humans and nature but still that affect of danger is lurking around still. Overall we can see positive and negative depictions of nature but they all connect to each other by relating it all to humans and nature. We see that most of the time nature doesn’t like to comply with humans but that still doesn’t mean that it can’t be fix, its just going to be a long-term.
